Sunflowers for Ukraine:

I began this series the week of Mother’s Day, 2022 when the war in Ukraine was intensifying. I set out to paint a sunflower a day with the intention of donating proceeds from all painting sales to support of Ukrainian mothers—my attempt to address that desire we all have to “do something” when we witness the atrocities from afar. Why the sunflower? The sunflower is the national flower of Ukraine..and I imagine it might be the source for the color scheme on their beautiful flag?. The sunflower is also a recurring theme in Modern European and American painting, with my most favorite examples being those by Vincent Van Gogh and Georgia O’Keefe. Van Gogh and O’Keefe each painted a sunflower series as an act of gratitude. Van Gogh for the companionship of his friend Gauguin; O’Keefe for the friendship of Margaret Johnson. I am grateful for my safety and my freedom. I am struck by the way the Ukrainian people are making the sunflower a symbol of hope, resilience and perseverance.

The paintings are 12 x 12 oil on canvas. $200 plus $20 for shipping and handling. All proceeds from sales will go to Save the Children Ukraine Fund https://www.savethechildren.org/us/where-we-work/ukraine and Razom for Ukraine https://www.razomforukraine.org/.

I will exhibit the series as a group in July at JLounge in Boulder, Colorado. In late August they will be dispersed and shipped to the many generous contributors…Thank you!

While many are spoken for, a number remain available for sale. I am building a list and letting buyer/contributors take their pick in the order they committed to a purchase. Contact me at monica.carroll.art@gmail.com if interested in selecting one.
