In this project I am exploring the way the IPhone and social media are impacting the way we experience landscape and altering our relationship to the environment. I am especially interested in the way our awareness of the IPhone inserts itself into the human connection with landscape…and the the effect that social media has on memory, perception, experience of place and aesthetics. These images are created be layering various stages of image-making and collecting: the original Iphone image taken as a note-taking on site, the digital image of the large oil painting created back in the studio from the that same experience, and the watercolor exploration that happens in response to the layering. In the resulting image, a watercolor and pigment print on rag paper; memory, technology, the notion of “real” versus “fake” and the painting process are all at play.
